Matthew 17:20 “And He said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.”
A demon possessed child was brought to the disciples for healing and the disciples tried all they could but the demon wouldn’t leave the child. The following day, the father of the child brought the demon possessed child to Jesus. Jesus spoke one word “out” and the demons fled from the child. When the disciples saw this happen, they were amazed and asked Jesus how could this happen. Then Jesus said to them that it is because they had little faith and if they only had faith as tiny as a mustard seed, they would move mountains.
This may sound very confusing to an ordinary person when Jesus said their faith was little however, if they had faith as tiny as a mustard seed, it will move mountains. There are two faiths mentioned in this passage of scripture. The first type of faith mentioned here is faith in yourself. This is that faith that causes many to believe in their abilities. The second type of faith mentioned by Jesus is faith in God. One of the attributes of God is the fact that He is omnipotent. The word omnipotent is derived from two words “omni = meaning all” and “potent = meaning powerful”. God has all power and all authority.
This means when we demonstrate even a tiny faith in God, it has more power than trusting in ourselves. If we had to reconstruct this verse based on what we now know, here is how it would read.
Matthew 17:20 “And He said to them, “Because of the littleness of [faith in yourselves]; for truly I say to you, if you have [faith in God] the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.”
Faith in yourselves or in your abilities is always very little in the sight of God. This is where most of the “self-help teachings” and “believe in yourselves” conferences fail. They mislead many in trusting in themselves, which is futile.
YOU DON’T NEED TO BELEIVE MORE IN YOURSELVES; ALL YOU NEED IS TO TRUST GOD A LITTLE.
I don’t know about you, as for me and my house, we will believe in God. I don’t care about the mountains before me nor the sea behind me. All I care about is Christ in me the hope of glory. You don’t need to study your enemies and devise strategies on how to defeat them, all you need to do is to find out about the God that you serve and He will deliver you from the mouth of the enemies. The devil may come to you with all his carnal weapons of jealousy, lies, defamation, gossips and witchcraft but all you need to do is call on the name of Jesus and He will show up in time of battle. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).
Father, I believe and trust in the power of your word. I don’t worry about tomorrow because my Father has tomorrow in His hands. Though my knowledge may fail, your word and your wisdom remain forever. I am set on a course of prosperity and blessings in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Keep rolling with Jesus,
