A few months ago, our company came up with a new tool to measure and monitor staff performance. This tool was called reinventing performance management. It was rolled out throughout the offices globally and was designed to aid in the success of the organisation. However, I noticed something strange about this tool. When I glanced through the key performance indicators (KPI), I realised that it was designed to achieve the goals of the owners of the firm. I also realised that these KPIs made staff members more stressed and depressed.
I am sure that your organisation has a similar tool or uses a similar approach. The thread that runs through every performance measurement tool is that the success of the organisation is determined by the owners of the organisation and not the staff members.
My colleagues were often worried and complained about these KPIs. However, they realised that I was always content and fulfilled. They couldn’t understand why I was not concerned about the new system. They asked me why I did not participate in the grievance letter that was sent to the directors of the firm. Well, I told them that I had a different measure of success and I was motivated by my definition of success rather than the KPIs. This keeps me passionate and motivated. I came up with a simple rule.
I wrote down what my wife wished I achieve, I also wrote down what my brothers, sisters and friends would want to see me achieve. Lastly, I wrote down what my kids and my parents wanted to see me achieve or do.
This list of 5 things made up my definition of success. It has become my key performance indicators (KPI) and it drives all that I do in life. Achieving these things gives me a great sense of fulfilment and it keeps me motivated. Finding out what they were was worth it.
Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
The Bible admonishes us not to conform to this world or the system of this world. The enemy will try to bait you with something attractive. It is important that you set the standards and not follow the standards of this world. As Christians, we are from another kingdom. We are here to establish the kingdom of God in the hearts of men and women. It is my prayer that the Holy Spirit gives you the wisdom to understand and define success for yourself.
Father, I thank you for this wisdom, I am different from this world and I function by different sets of rules. I have been transformed the renewing of my mind through the scriptures and I know who I am. Success is mine. The prosperous life is mine. The glorious life is mine in the mighty name of Jesus.
What drives you? Are you feeling depressed? Do you have a definition of success in your life? Write to me and I will be glad to know what success means to you.
Keep reigning in life,
