The Purpose of Wisdom – The Beginning

In the Western world, especially in the English speaking part of the world, the word wisdom is used very differently from the days of old. If I told you that I met a wise person, you would probably be thinking of a person who is eloquent, old aged, provides good counsel or possesses good ideas. However, the origin of the word wisdom means something entirely different. If you are born again and have been around Church going folks, it is important that you grasp this meaning because it will catapult you from where you are into a greater dimension in life. Let me take you to an old text in the Bible that was written thousands of years ago concerning the origin of wisdom. Here is what the Bible says

Psalms 111:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: His praise endures forever.”

The word “wisdom” used is beyond wise counsel or thinking, the word wisdom (original Hebrew word “chochmah”) means skilful abilities. This passage is saying to us that in order to become skilful in life (wise), you should first show deep reverence for God. This means acknowledging God as the all skilful person. This is why I know this because the next verses say this:

Psalms 136:5 “To Him that by wisdom made the heavens: for His mercy endures forever”

The Bible shows us that it was by wisdom that God made the heavens. The creative ability of God is called His wisdom.

A young man once argued with a Rabbi that God does not exist and asked the Rabbi to prove to him whether God really exists. The Rabbi asked the young man to go home and return the next day. When the young man returned the next day the Rabbi asked the young man who made the clothes he was putting on? The young man responded that it was the linen designer. The Rabbi said the linen designer did not exist and the young man should prove to him that he existed. The young man responded that the linen he wore was the proof that the linen designer existed. The Rabbi told the young man that just as his clothes proved the existence of the linen designer, so do the mountains, hills, forest, stars and the sun all prove the existence of God.

Wisdom - The fear of the Lord

The fear of the Lord is not being scared of God, the fear of God means that we have acknowledged God as the creator of heaven and earth and that His wisdom is infinite. Those who fear the Lord are those who have come to the knowledge that His wisdom is perfect and cannot be improved upon. God in His wisdom applies His infinite knowledge so that He attains His goals in a way which glorifies Him the most. This is the main reason why an uneducated person can accomplish great things in life and prosper while an educated person won’t be able to do the same. Wisdom is not acquired, it is living and active. True wisdom is stepping out of your comfort zone with full knowledge that your efforts will be achieved using the skilful abilities that God has blessed you with.

Prayer

Father, I acknowledge you as the creator of heaven and earth. Your plans for my life are perfect. Your time is perfect and your wisdom keeps the world alive. I am determined to use the wisdom of God this year to accomplish greater things in life. I cannot fail because I function with the wisdom that I received from you in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen
