There is a difference between being “made free” and being “set free”

The concept of freedom in the New Testament is something that many believers grapple with and struggle to understand. As born again, spirit filled Christians, we are free in Christ but this freedom is a special type of freedom. The type of freedom that we enjoy in Christ is different from the type of freedom given to a prisoner from jail.

The word of God describes us as people who have been “made free”. If a prisoner is released from jail, that prisoner has been “set free”. Here is what the Bible says:

John 8:31-36 – Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

As you can see from the verse above, Jesus said the truth shall make you free not set you free. Certain versions of the Bible that were not properly translated still have it as “set you free” but the original Hebrew text says “make you free”.

To be made free from sin means that our nature is free from the dominion of sin. It means that you are designed to repel sin and the consequences of sin. This is very powerful because those who are set free from sin can still fall into it, but our nature has been designed in a manner that sin can’t dwell in us. The Bible says something very powerful:

Romans 6:14 – For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

This verse is very powerful. This means that the thing that causes sickness, disease and death has been removed from you the day you received Jesus Christ as Lord of your life. This truth is what will make you free from poverty. This truth will make you free from cancer, TB, high blood pressure, diabetes and all forms of sicknesses in your body.

The truth is what the word of God says concerning you. The truth is not necessarily the fact that you see with your optical eyes. The truth is every word that comes out of the mouth of God. The fact may be that you have cancer, but the truth is that you are healed by the stripes of Jesus because the word says so.

1 Peter 2:24 – who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.

You should ignore that fact and believe in the truth about you.

Let me explain the concept of being made free vs. being set free. If a person is made free from cancer, it means that thing that causes cancer has been removed from that person. However, if a person is set free from cancer, it means that the symptoms of cancer have been removed but the thing that causes cancer is still present in that person.

You have been made free from poverty. You have been made free from disease and sickness. You have been made free from failure, this is the reason why your life will only move from success to success.
